Orbán threatens “march on Brussels” as EU sovereignty dispute heats up

Viktor Orbán threatened to “march on Brussels” and “occupy” the political centre of the European Union as he fights for Hungary’s sovereignty, GB News reported.

Speaking to supporters at a rally in Budapest to mark the country’s bank holidays, the Hungarian PM said he had “no choice” but to march on the EU capital.

“If we want to defend Hungary’s freedom and sovereignty, we have no other choice but to occupy Brussels,” Orbán stressed.

Orbán has long been at odds with other EU members on a range of issues, including refusing to supply arms to Kyiv and maintaining economic ties with Moscow after the outbreak of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. He further added that the EU’s actions are hitting farmers, hurting the middle class, hurting companies, and dragging Europe into conflict with Russia.

He has also openly supported Trump’s bid to return to the White House and praised him as the only candidate in the presidential election capable of ending the war in Ukraine.

Joe Biden confirmed Orbán’s aspirations, saying during a campaign stop that Orbán “stated flatly he doesn’t think democracy works and is looking for dictatorship.” Hungary’s foreign minister Peter Szijjarto, in turn, called Biden’s statement a lie and “a very serious insult”: “This way of thinking by the president and the Democratic administration is a heavy burden on our bilateral relationship.”

Orbán’s remarks came as he prepares to take over the rotating EU presidency for the second half of the year.

“We will not accept that Brussels left Europeans alone, furthermore, it turned against them,” according to Orbán.
