About a hundred people died in clashes between fans at a football match in Nzérékoré, Guinea’s second largest city on Monday.
A doctor said about 100 people had died, with bodies filling a local hospital and morgue. He also added:
“At the hospital, the bodies are lined up in rows as far as the eye can see. Others are lying on the floor in the corridors. The morgue is full.”
Eyewitnesses said the incident was triggered by a controversial decision by the referee, who showed a red card and then awarded a penalty to one of the teams, after which fans started fighting.
Police fired tear gas to break them up. In an attempt to escape, fans rushed out of the stadium and the exits were jammed. Many died from suffocation or from falling off the stadium walls while trying to get outside.
The match was part of a tournament in honour of Guinea’s rebel leader Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya.
