Over 80 migrants rescued but two died off Libya’s coast, MSF informs

Over 80 migrants have been rescued but two have died and three are missing following two rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya.

The vessel MSF Geo Barents picked up more than 60 people from a rubber dinghy in distress in international waters off Libya on Saturday evening. One body was lifted from the water and one person died after being rescued,

19 people were picked up from a nearby abandoned Tunisian offshore oil platform, according to MSF.

The migrants told rescuers they swam there after the boat they were travelling on began to take on water. Three people remained on the boat and were reported missing, the charity added.

The crossing of the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa to Italy or Malta are some of the most dangerous migration routes in the world. Nearly 2,500 migrants died or went missing on these routes last year, according to the International Organisation for Migration.
