Pakistan’s military carried out a training launch of a surface-to-surface missile on Saturday. The move follows rising tensions with India after a recent deadly attack in the disputed Kashmir region.
India blames Pakistan for supporting the attack, which targeted tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last month and killed 26 people. The incident has renewed friction between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The military confirmed that it tested the Abdali Weapon System. This missile has a range of 450 kilometres (279 miles). The launch aimed to check the readiness of the system and verify its updated navigation and manoeuvrability features. Officials did not reveal the test location.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given his military full freedom to respond to the Kashmir attack. Pakistan denies any involvement and has called for an independent investigation.
Earlier this week, Pakistan warned of a possible Indian air strike. It also stated that it would respond forcefully to any aggression.
Several international powers have urged both countries to reduce tensions. China has called for restraint. The European Union described the situation as “alarming”.
US Vice President JD Vance, speaking to Fox News, asked India to avoid any response that could escalate the conflict. He also urged Pakistan to act against militants operating within its territory.
