Pentagon forces early exit of army chief as Trump ally seeks to reshape military leadership

The Pentagon has announced on Friday the immediate resignation of the US Army’s top officer, General Randy George, in a move that signals a broader effort to realign military leadership with the strategic vision of the current administration.

The US Department of Defence has confirmed the abrupt resignation of Army Chief of Staff Randy George. The announcement was made by Assistant Secretary of Defence Sean Parnell in a statement posted on X.

“General Randy George is stepping down as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for his service to our country,” Parnell wrote, referring to his role as a public affairs aide to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Earlier, CBS, citing unnamed sources, reported that Hegseth had personally asked George to resign without delay. One source indicated that the defence chief is seeking a successor aligned with the military vision he shares with US president Donald Trump.

According to CBS, a leading candidate to replace George is Vice Chief of Staff Christopher LaNeve.

George previously served as senior military aide to Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin during the administration of Joe Biden between 2021 and 2022, capping a military career spanning several decades.

A career infantry officer and graduate of West Point, George took part in the Gulf War and later deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Army chief of staff typically serves a four-year term. George was nominated by Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, which would have seen him remain in post until 2027.

In a separate development, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg stepped down in January as a presidential envoy and joined the advisory board of BGR Group. Meanwhile, US Attorney General Pam Bondi left her position on April 2.
