People protest outside White House against Israel’s Rafah offensive plan

Demonstrators gathered outside the White House late Monday night (12 February) to protest Israel’s attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Protesters, including non-governmental organisations and university students, expressed disapproval of US President Joe Biden and supported the Palestinians.

The Israeli army plans to launch a ground offensive on Rafah, home to more than 1 million residents, to defeat what Israel calls the remaining “Hamas battalions.”

At least 28,340 people have been killed and 67,984 injured in Israeli retaliatory attacks since the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by a Hamas attack on 7 October. Nearly 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas offensive.

South Africa filed charges against Israel in the International Court of Justice, accusing the country of genocide. In January, the court ordered the Israeli government to refrain from acts of genocide and to take measures to ensure that humanitarian aid is provided to civilians in Gaza.
