Philippine general election underway

Philippine voters are casting their ballots in midterm elections on Monday. Much attention is focused on the Senate elections, where Vice President Sara Duterte faces impeachment proceedings.

Midterm elections are held at the national and local levels halfway through the president’s six-year term. Citizens elect half of the 24 senators and all members of the House of Representatives, as well as governors, mayors and all other local officials running for office.

The rift between Sara Duterte and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is widening. They disagree on issues such as the arrest of Sara Duterte’s father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, on an International Criminal Court warrant.

In February, the House of Representatives impeached Sara Duterte on a number of charges, including misuse of public funds.

The Senate plans to begin the impeachment process against Sara Duterte as early as July. If at least two-thirds of the 24 senators find her guilty, she will lose her vice-presidential post and will not be able to run for president in 2028.

The vote count will begin immediately after the polls close on Monday.
