The death toll from the collapse of a nine-storey building under construction in the Philippine city of Angeles has risen to 20, with authorities now examining potential breaches of workplace safety standards.
Rescue workers recovered the bodies of three more people from the rubble on Tuesday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 20. The building, which was still under construction, gave way in the early hours of May 24.
The Philippine Department of Labour and Employment has said that there may have been violations of occupational health and safety standards at the construction site.
A total of 27 people have been rescued from the debris. Initial reports following the collapse had indicated four deaths. Dozens of workers were trapped when the structure came down. Around ten managed to escape on their own, while a further 26 were pulled from the rubble in the hours immediately after the disaster.
A Malaysian national who was staying in a nearby hotel was also injured in the incident and later died from his injuries.
