Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has confirmed that more help will be available to Singaporeans in February when the Government unveils the new Budget.
Speaking during a visit to Jalan Besar GRC on 4 January, PM Wong acknowledged that many Singaporeans are worried about rising living costs. He reassured them that the Government is working to address these concerns.
On 3 January, every Singaporean household received $300 worth of CDC vouchers. PM Wong expressed hope that this would provide a positive start to the new year.
“We aim to support you as you prepare for the year ahead,” he said. “We will continue to provide more assistance, with the Budget announcement coming next month.”
Addressing opngoing challenges
PM Wong assured Singaporeans that the Government would persist in looking at different programmes and schemes that help with daily concerns, particularly those related to the cost of living. He also stressed that these measures would help citizens achieve their shared aspirations for the future.
He reflected on the country’s progress as 2025 marks Singapore’s 60th anniversary. “SG60 is a time not only to celebrate but also to reflect on how far we’ve come, who we are, and what kind of Singapore we want for the next generation,” he added.
This year also marks one year since PM Wong took office. He has visited various constituencies, including Tanjong Pagar, Ang Mo Kio, and Tampines. His visit to Jalan Besar on 4 January was his first of 2025.
Celebrating SG60 with community initiatives
PM Wong took part in the “SG60 Build with Love” initiative at Kreta Ayer Square. This event aims to help 1,000 underprivileged households in Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng (KAKS) by distributing SG60 gift boxes. The community-driven project focuses on fostering inclusivity, unity, and care among residents while celebrating Singapore’s 60th year.
During the event, PM Wong joined 60 residents in assembling the largest Singapore map made from SG60 gift boxes. The initiative is part of the ongoing efforts by grassroots organisations to build a more caring community.
About 1,000 volunteers, including pre-schoolers like Timaeus Eliran, 5, helped prepare the gift boxes. These included an SG60 cushion, blanket, towel, and insect repellent, donated by various corporate partners. Volunteers also wrote personal messages to be included with the gifts.
The effort was well received by all. Timaeus’s father, security officer Manivannan Jayasilan, expressed hope that his son would learn about Singapore’s development over time.
Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo, who also attended the event, praised the initiative. “This represents the spirit of ‘together we grow’. It’s not just about the gift boxes; it’s about bringing everyone together to create a more inclusive and caring community,” she said.
