Poland applied for nuclear weapons deployment

Poland applied for participation in the Nuclear Sharing programme, Deputy Minister of National Defence Paweł Zalewski told Polish Television.

Earlier on April 22, President Andrzej Duda confirmed that he had talks with the US administration about the deployment of nuclear weapons in Poland to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. He met with US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as well as White House officials during the visit to Washington in mid-April. The Polish president reiterated his commitment to increase defence spending to 4% of GDP.

Intensive military support for Poland by the US and UK could lead to the country becoming the front line in a possible war between NATO and Russia. However, both sides have previously maintained that they have no intention of fighting each other.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Europe had entered a “pre-war period” and that no one in Europe would feel safe if Ukraine was defeated.

I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a thing of the past. Mentally we have to get used to a new era. We are in a pre-war period. I’m not exaggerating, it’s becoming more and more obvious every day.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez asked EU leaders to stop using the word “war”, but Tusk claimed that war in Europe’s neighbours was no longer an abstract idea.
