Poland shows off big oil, gas find in Baltic Sea

A new oil and natural gas field has been discovered in north-western Poland. The operating company, Central European Petroleum (CEP), has called it the largest in the country and one of the largest in Europe, Polish media reported on Monday.

The field is located on the Baltic Sea coast, near the city of Szczecin.

Reserves could amount to 22 million tonnes of oil and 5 billion cubic metres of commercial gas. Total oil reserves are estimated at 33 billion tonnes, gas reserves at 27 billion cubic metres.

The Wolin East 1 well was drilled to a depth of 9.5 metres. Work was completed in February.

Central European Petroleum is a Canadian company headquartered in Calgary. A controlling stake is owned by Norwegian investors. A subsidiary of CEP holds a licence for the 593 square kilometre Wolin block, issued by the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment.

Last September, an oil field was discovered in Poland near the town of Åšwiebodzin. Its recoverable reserves are estimated at 100,000 tonnes.
