Poland will back its veto on the migration pact as the EU seeks agreement on a system for distributing asylum seekers, according to Reuters.
A senior EU migration official says the EU is about to agree on how to tackle illegal immigration. Ministerial talks failed to produce a final agreement on Thursday as Berlin and Rome worried about a surge in arrivals ahead of crucial elections.
On 15 October, elections will also be held in Poland, where the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) Party has promised voters to protect the country from illegal immigration. A referendum on the issue is scheduled for the same day as the election.
Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated:
I am going to the European Council next week where I will uphold my veto on illegal migration. This is an attempt to attack not only the sovereignty of Poland and other member states, but also an attempt to destabilise the EU in a non-democratic manner.
