Russia launched airstrikes on Kyiv and the Lviv region in western Ukraine on Sunday, prompting the armed forces of neighbouring Poland to activate aircraft to secure airspace near the border, officials reported.
Several explosions occurred in the Ukrainian capital after air defence systems were deployed to repel the attack, which destroyed about a dozen Russian-fired missiles over Kyiv and around the capital, officials said.
Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said there were no casualties or serious damage as a result of the attacks.
During the major strike on Lviv, Russian missiles flew near the border with Poland, Ukrainian news outlets told Telegram.
“Polish and allied aircraft have been activated, which may result in increased noise levels, especially in the south-eastern part of the country,” Poland’s armed forces said on X.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi made a statement on Telegram that there were no direct attacks on the city, but about 20 missiles and seven attack drones were launched across the Lviv region, targeting “critical infrastructure.”
