Polish opposition initiating vote of no confidence in Interior Ministry after riots in Warsaw

Polish opposition is demanding the resignation of Interior and Administration Minister Marcin Kierwiński over Wednesday’s street riots, Krzysztof Bosak, deputy speaker of the country’s Sejm, said.

During the farmers’ street protest on Wednesday, protesters behaved rather aggressively. Near the Prime Minister’s Office, protesters provoked clashes with police, setting tyres on fire and throwing burning objects towards the building. Near the Sejm building, they dismantled the cobblestone pavement and threw stones at the police, 14 policemen were injured.

Bosak told RMF FM radio station:

I will demand information from the prime minister today on this matter, and we demand the resignation of Minister Kerviński for what happened. This could not have happened without authorisation from above.

In his opinion, the police themselves instigated the riots. The deputy speaker added:

“I was at the farmers’ demonstration both under the Sejm and the prime minister’s office at noon. Later I had duties in the Sejm. It was very peaceful. I saw tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people protesting and they were calm both with journalists, politicians and police. What happened later under the Sejm is to me a scandal. It’s artificially provoked.”
