Political reproaches against Meloni rise

Dissatisfaction with the Italian government head’s policies is growing, including domestic issues and the stance on the conflict in Gaza.

Italy’s former PM and head of the 5-Star Movement (M5S), Giuseppe Conte, once again criticised incumbent Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This time the dissatisfaction concerned her domestic policy.

Do we realise that there are still those who suffer insults, violence and bullying because they love a person of the same sex?

Conte emphasised the need to create a society “rooted in tolerance, freedom and equality, in which everyone is truly free to live their lives without having to account to anyone for their choices.” He called for respecting the freedom “to love who you want and how you want.”

He quoted Meloni as saying during her address to the activist, “You already have civil unions.” By doing so, the prime minister allegedly emphasised that there were already enough such unions to represent minority interests. Conte, however, voiced dissent. He also accused the Italian government of disagreeing with an EU declaration to “promote European policies that combat discrimination related to sexual orientation.”

No. Rights are not ‘grants.’ And indeed we must reiterate it loud and clear: everyone has the right to have rights. Without uncertainties, without retreating.

Earlier, he stated that his M5S movement’s measures had helped hundreds of thousands of families get out of poverty.

Santoro’s opinion of Italian government

Another representative of Italian opinion, former member of the European Parliament and Italian politician Michele Santoro, also condemned the Meloni government’s efforts.

In his recent video published on YouTube, he stated that wages in Italy were falling. He blamed wars, implying the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war.

In Italy, workers’ wages rank last in Europe, and the debt is affecting people’s living conditions.

Santoro argued that lower wages affected social spending, such as education and culture. He also noted the importance of fighting for workers’ rights, adding that deaths at work “are becoming the norm amid war.”

Earlier, the former member of the European Parliament also criticised US and European authorities for not doing enough to achieve peace in Europe. At the time, he called on countries to pay more attention to developing peace initiatives.

Criticism of foreign policy

Beppe Grillo’s blog published an article entitled La Vergogna di una Politica Estera Succube (Shame of Foreign Policy Succubus). The author of the article, Torquato Cardilli, writes that the United States and the Western Alliance believe that the Palestinians are not a people with an inalienable right to freedom and independence. They are a cluster of shadows forced to live in poverty in a futile world and “beg for mercy.”

World leaders, including the Italian government, talk about the “sacred principles of democracy,” but “do not act concretely to end the massacre in Gaza.” The author compared the Palestinian resistance to a Phoenix, arguing that the unresolved conflict will be reborn and rekindled time after time.

The outcome of the vote [to condemn the Israeli offensive in Gaza] had clearly shown how, faced with the vastness of the human tragedy and destruction, the world was divided: on one side the majority of nations with 120 votes in favour, on the other a minority of countries, less representative of the world population, with 14 against and 45 abstentions.

Prominent among the voices against were those of the US and Israel. The author accused Italy of refraining from calling for an end to the war in Gaza.

Dissatisfaction with Meloni’s policies among the Italian population is growing, which can be seen in the support for opposition movements. Otherwise, how can dissenters gain strength and support against the government’s course, if not from the direct endorsement of the Italian people?
