Pope Francis in critical condition, Vatican says

The condition of Pope Francis, hospitalised with bilateral pneumonia, remains “critical but stable,” Vatican News reported, citing the Holy See press service.

The pontiff underwent a routine CT scan to monitor the course of the disease. The prognosis remains cautious, noted the Vatican noted.

“The Pope spent a peaceful night and is resting,” the report said.

On February 14, 88-year-old Pope Francis was hospitalised with a respiratory tract infection. He even had to cancel meetings with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and CNN CEO Mark Thompson. The pontiff also missed two consecutive sermons.

On February 22, Italian media reported that the condition of the Pope has deteriorated to critical: he needed medical attention in connection with a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis. In addition, the head of the Holy See had to have a blood transfusion because of a drop in the number of platelets due to arrhythmia.
