Pope Francis to remain hospitalised as respiratory infection presents “complex clinical picture”

Pope Francis will require further hospitalisation as his respiratory tract infection presents a “complex clinical picture,” the Vatican announced.

The 88-year-old pontiff’s health has raised growing concerns, particularly given his increasingly frail condition. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated that recent medical tests confirmed the pope was suffering from a “polymicrobial respiratory tract infection,” necessitating adjustments to his drug therapy.

No specific timeframe was provided for his hospital stay, which has already exceeded the duration of his 2023 hospitalisation for pneumonia. Bruni emphasised that the complexity of his symptoms “will require an appropriate hospital stay.”

Fourth hospitalisation since 2013

This marks Pope Francis’ fourth hospitalisation since his election in 2013, highlighting the growing health challenges. The Argentine pope, who had part of one lung removed following a pulmonary infection in his youth, is known for his relentless work ethic despite his physical limitations.

Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday in “fair” condition after a week-long bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors diagnosed a respiratory tract infection and prescribed “absolute rest” alongside unspecified medications.

Bruni reported that Francis ate breakfast and read the newspapers on Monday morning after a third peaceful night in the hospital. Despite his illness, the pope has maintained his characteristic determination, insisting on completing his morning audiences on Friday before being hospitalised, even though he was struggling to speak due to shortness of breath.

The Vatican confirmed the cancellation of the pope’s appointments through Monday, including a planned meeting with artists at Rome’s Cinecittà film studios as part of the Catholic Church’s Holy Year celebrations.

His next scheduled public appearance is the weekly general audience on Wednesday, followed by the ordination of deacons on Sunday as part of Holy Year festivities. While his participation in these events remains uncertain, they are still listed on the official Vatican schedule.

Concerns over Pope’s health

The pope’s hospitalisation has drawn attention to his precarious health, particularly given his history of respiratory issues. During his 2023 bout of pneumonia, Francis left the hospital after just three days and later revealed he had been admitted urgently after experiencing chest pain and fainting.

This time, his condition appears more serious, with the Vatican emphasising the need for extended care.

When Francis missed the Jubilee Mass dedicated to artists this past Sunday, a cardinal stepped in to preside over the ceremony. The pope’s absence underscores the challenges he faces in balancing his health with his demanding role as the leader of the Catholic Church.

As Pope Francis continues his recovery, the global Catholic community remains hopeful for his swift improvement while acknowledging the increasing fragility of his health.
