President of Kyrgyzstan sacked Prime Minister

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov dismissed Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov, according to a statement issued by the presidential administration.

Japarov was “dismissed from his post due to a transfer to another position,” the official statement read. He will be replaced by First Deputy Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliyev. Kasymaliyev headed the country’s Finance Ministry from 2015 to 2018.

The government, where Akylbek Japarov served as prime minister since 2021, is not due to resign. All ministers will also retain their posts.

President Sadyr Japarov came to power in October 2020 amid protests in Bishkek’s central Ala-Too Square. Demonstrators demanded a new vote, with protests escalating into clashes with police.

Then-President Sooronbay Jeenbekov resigned and Japarov became prime minister. The latter won an early presidential election in January 2021.
