Presidential election campaigning kicks off in South Korea

The official election campaign for South Korea’s 21st presidential election, scheduled for June 3, began on Monday.

Lee Jae-myung will be the first candidate on the ballot. He is the leader of the liberal Toburo party. He is an experienced politician who lost the last presidential election by a narrow margin to former President Yoon Suk Yeol. This happened after Lee Jae-myung, who was trailing in the polls, lost to Yoon, who had joined forces with another conservative candidate, Ahn Cheol-soo.

Until recently, Lee’s participation in the presidential election was in question. The fact is that two hearings were to be held in court on charges of corruption and violation of electoral law against Lee Jae-myung. However, the court postponed the hearings until after the presidential election. If Lee is elected head of state, he cannot be prosecuted while he is president, as he will have immunity.

One of the key events of the election campaign was the ruling People Power Party’s decision to approve Kim Moon-soo as its candidate for the presidential election, despite his lag behind his internal rival, former Prime Minister Han Dong-soo.

Kim Moon-soo promises to make his homeland a great country. He intends to build national unity by bringing together not only his party’s supporters but also different segments of society. His opponents are not standing idly by, and the upcoming debates and public appearances promise to be exciting and eventful.

After registering his candidacy, Kim met with Han Duck-soo at the party headquarters and promised to cooperate for victory in the presidential election. The politicians embraced, and the former South Korean prime minister congratulated his colleague on his decision to run for president.

Han Duck-soo was appointed acting president after parliament voted to impeach South Korean President Yoon. Han was also impeached less than two weeks after taking office. The opposition accused him of failing to block Yoon’s declaration of martial law in the country. Later, the court rejected the impeachment decision and Han Duck-soo was reinstated.

Starting today, candidates will be able to use campaign vehicles and loudspeakers and speak in public places from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
