Kate, Britain’s Princess of Wales, has successfully undergone routine abdominal surgery and King Charles will undergo treatment for an enlarged prostate, royal officials said on Wednesday.
Kate, 42, wife of heir to the throne Prince William, was admitted to a private London clinic on Tuesday. She is expected to be there for 10 to 14 days before returning home to recover, the Kensington Palace office said. Details of the surgery have not yet been released. The statement said:
“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”
Two hours after the surprise announcement, Buckingham Palace said Charles, 75, would also go to hospital next week for a “corrective procedure” but said his condition was benign.
Less than two hours after that unexpected announcement, Buckingham Palace revealed that Charles, 75, would also attend hospital next week for a “corrective procedure” but said his condition was benign. The palace said in a statement:
“In common with thousands of men each year, the king has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate.”
Both monarchs are in good health and last appeared in public on Christmas Day, at an annual church service outside King Charles’ home in Sandringham in eastern England.
Kensington Palace said it would only report on Kate’s health if “significant new information” emerges. It added that she was unlikely to return to public duties before Easter, on the advice of her doctor.
