Protests in Tel Aviv after IDF soldiers shoot dead three Israeli hostages

Tel Aviv is filled with protesters after news of the accidental killing of three Israeli hostages.

Protesters doused the streets in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Friday night with red paint symbolising blood and hung posters criticising the government after the deaths of three hostages by the Israeli military were revealed.

IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the soldiers were fighting in the Shejaiya neighbourhood in northern Gaza when they opened fire on them because they “mistakenly identified” them as a threat.

This is a tragic incident, the IDF bears responsibility.

The spokesperson said the three hostages “appeared to be terrorists because there were no good visuals on them, and they could have been wearing clothes that belonged to locals.”

Additionally, this was not the first case of the terrible fate of prisoners after the 7 October attack. Earlier, Israel’s officials identified the bodies as Eden Zakaria, 27, and Ziv Dado, 36. Zakaria was taken hostage in the Hamas attack on the Nova rave festival near Re’im; she had travelled to the festival with her boyfriend Ofek Kimchi, 23, who was killed in the attack. Dado was also killed in the 7 October attack. Israel had previously identified Mr Dado as a “fallen soldier held” by Hamas.

The Israeli authorities informed the families of Dado and Zakaria and returned their bodies to their home country. The bodies were also examined by medical and rabbinical authorities.
