Russian President Vladimir Putin considers the criminal prosecution of Donald Trump a sign of the “rottenness of the American political system”. By doing so, he expresses his contempt for democracy in the United States.
Putin said Trump’s case showed the true face of the US political system to the whole world. He said at a plenary session of the 2023 Eastern Economic Forum in Russia’s city of Vladivostok. He added:
“For us, what is happening today (in the US), in my opinion, is good. This shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to lecture others about democracy. This reveals who is fighting against us. It demonstrates the ‘bestial guise of American imperialism,’ its bared teeth.”
Donald Trump led the United States from 2017 to 2021. He is currently the most likely Republican Party candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Donald Trump faces numerous charges ranging from tax evasion and harassment to pressuring officials and attempted coup d’état. The politician faces a lengthy prison sentence on numerous charges.
However, Vladimir Putin said that regardless of who wins the US election in 2024, significant changes in US-Russian relations are unlikely because the US authorities are “hammering into people’s heads” that Russia is an existential adversary. He said:
“No matter who is elected, the vector of anti-Russian U.S. policy is unlikely to be affected.”
