Denmark’s Queen Margrethe has been hospitalised after a fall at Fredensborg Castle, local media reported on Thursday.
According to DRTV, she was hospitalised at Rigshospitalet on Tuesday night for observation. Despite the fall, the queen’s condition is stable, but she will remain hospitalised for observation, media reported, citing a statement from the royal house.
The palace’s communications chief Lene Balleby stated:
“Queen Margrethe was taken to Rigshospitalet last night after falling at Fredensborg Palace. The Queen is doing well given the circumstances but is currently admitted for observation.”
Due to her hospitalisation, the Queen’s planned participation in the 5th anniversary celebrations of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University has been cancelled, the Royal Household’s website has confirmed.
Although Queen Margrethe abdicated in January, she still fulfils a number of official duties.
The queen’s last public appearance was on Monday, when she attended an event at the Karen Blixen Museum in Rungstedlund.
The Queen announced her decision to abdicate during her New Year’s Eve speech on December 31. In her speech, she said that among the reasons for reconsidering her role were health considerations.
The Queen underwent major back surgery in February 2023, which was successful but required a period of convalescence.
