Queen Sonja of Norway leaves hospital

Queen Sonja of Norway was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after an emergency hospitalisation this week.

A statement from the Norwegian Royal Court said, “Her Majesty the Queen has been discharged from the National Hospital. The Queen was admitted due to shortness of breath. Investigations show that the situation has normalised. The Queen is on sick leave for the rest of the week.”

On the evening of April 21, Norway’s Queen Sonja, 87, was taken to the National Hospital for evaluation due to shortness of breath.

Sonja has been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis since 2018. In January this year, she was fitted with a pacemaker due to heart problems, indicating a gradual deterioration in the queen’s health.

In early April, Queen Sonja felt quite well and even received the President of Iceland at the palace together with her husband.

Earlier, representatives of the royal court reported about the need to increase rest time for the queen due to the progressive lung disease. It was emphasised that the schedule of her official events will be adjusted more quickly than before. She was fitted with a pacemaker in January this year due to atrial fibrillation.

Sonja, born on July 4, 1937 in Oslo, is the consort of King Harald V. She is the daughter of Carl August Haraldsen and Dagny Ulrichsen. Before her marriage to Crown Prince Harald, Sonja dated him in secret for nine years due to disagreement with her “non-royal” background.

After the heir to the throne declared his willingness to relinquish his rights if he was not allowed to marry Sonja, his father, King Ulaf V, sought government counselling. As a result, the couple’s wedding took place on August 29, 1968 in Oslo. Queen Sonja and King Harald have two children: Princess Martha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon.
