Red alert for 13 Italian cities due to heat wave

Italy’s Health Ministry has issued a “red alert” in 13 cities due to expected extreme heat in the coming days, Italian media reported on Tuesday.

The impact of extreme heat is expected to be much greater in the coming days, the local media reported, citing the ministry’s warning to residents to exercise caution because the weather conditions could endanger their health.

The capital Rome, Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Florence, Florence, Frosinone, Latina, Milan, Palermo, Perugia, Rieti, Torino and Naples have all been placed on red alert.

Last week UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for countries to address the urgency of the extreme heat epidemic, fueled by climate change – days after the world registered its hottest day on record. He said:

Extreme heat is the new abnormal. The world must rise to the challenge of rising temperatures.

Every month since June 2023 has now ranked as the planet’s warmest since records began in 1940, compared with the corresponding month in previous years, according the European Union ’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
