Referendum to find out whether UK should leave ECHR

MPs want Boris Johnson to instigate another European referendum to see whether Britain should withdraw from the ECHR – Daily Mail informs.

Holding a referendum on leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) the same day as the general election is the only way to take the threat away from Reform UK, MPs and peers claimed. Boris Johnson will lead a referendum campaign to “defeat” Nigel Farage, according to MPs and peers.

The calculation is that Reform voters, who are likely to support withdrawal from the ECHR, will know that a yes vote will only be made by the Conservative Party, whose manifesto will state that it will respect the will of the people if re-elected.

The plan has been spearheaded by former Tory deputy leader Brendan Clark-Smith. The referendum and election plan is being presented as the only way to avoid destroying the Tory party at the election.

The referendum is to be accompanied by a promise to reform the Human Rights Act – another promise to be included in the manifesto, according to supporters of a double vote.

The Convention was created shortly after the end of World War II to promote human rights, individual liberty, democracy, free elections, respect for property rights and access to education. One of the driving forces behind the convention was Winston Churchill, the wartime statesman whom Brexit supporters today revere as a symbol of British independence and self-reliance.
