Renowned Greek orchestra conductor expressed his deep affection for Turkey

Greek orchestra conductor Nikos Haliassas, speaking in the foyer of the Afyonkarahisar New Museum, expressed his joy at the experience and described Turkey as his “second home.”

Renowned Greek orchestra conductor and experienced principal violinist Nikos Haliassas conducted the Bursa Regional State Symphony Orchestra at the opening of the 23rd Afyonkarahisar Classical Music Festival in the foyer of the Afyonkarahisar New Museum.

Nikos Haliassas expressed his deep affection for Turkey, considering it as his “second home.” He also praised Czech violinist Daniel Matejča, who accompanied him during his performance.

He has been principal violinist of the Athens State Orchestra since 2000, as well as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Athens Intrarti Orchestra. Haliassas has conducted various orchestras and ensembles both domestically and internationally, notably leading the Sinfonia International Music Festival, MusiKos and Halki festivals.

Expressing his joy at holding the festival’s opening concert with the Bursa Regional State Symphony Orchestra for the third time, he particularly emphasised it was a great surprise to him that such a festival has been held in a small town in Turkey for 23 years now.

Recalling his previous performances in Antalya and Adana earlier in the year, he expressed his admiration for Turkey, noting the striking similarities between the Greek and Turkish civilisations. He said:

“I admire everything in Türkiye. Our civilizations resemble each other in character.”
