Roads reopen in Sheffield, police continue negotiations with armed man

Roads have been reopened as a stand-off between an armed man and police continues in Sheffield, BBC reports.

Police were called to the Gateway apartment block in Broad Street just after 19:00 GMT on Monday following reports of a man holding a weapon.

Residents were evacuated to nearby Ponds Forge Sports Centre and transport disruption began in the town.

South Yorkshire Police said residents were still evacuated, although Sheffield Parkway has reopened in both directions and public transport has started running as normal. Police added that they would “work with residents to ensure pets in the building are cared for and reunited where possible.”

The cordon has been significantly reduced compared to Tuesday, when Broad Street and surrounding roads were closed.

There were major traffic disruptions in Sheffield city centre, with trams unable to run between Sheffield Station and City Hall.

Ambulances, fire engines and around 10 police cars arrived at the scene, but by around 07:30 GMT on Wednesday the number had been reduced to three.
