Romania establishes state-owned railway company for defence needs

The Romanian government approved the creation of a state-run railway company under the EU’s new military mobility initiative, according to Euractiv.

The company will be in charge of strategic transport in Romania. It will be a reliable option in case private transport companies refuse or are unable to provide certain railway services.

Recent years highlighted the Romanian state’s need for a reliable rail freight operator capable of transporting troops, equipment and weapons in the event of military mobilisation in Romania or in its strategic partners.

The railway company will also facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to conflict zones, supporting international co-operation efforts. This will help prevent potential food or energy crises.

Romania committed to improving military mobility through participation in the Permanent Structured Co-operation (PESCO) and reaffirmed the commitment at the NATO Summit in June 2018.
