Romania forms new coalition government amid political crisis

The Romanian parliament’s plenary session on Monday evening approved the Romanian government headed by Marcel Ciolacu. The government will consist of 16 ministries and will have three deputy prime ministers from three parties – the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania.

With the required minimum of 233 votes out of 383, Marcel Ciolacu’s cabinet received the approval of only 240 deputies and senators.

Marcel Ciolacu specified that the government’s programme will last for 4 years and will respond to economic and social challenges, while the main short-term goal of the new government is to organise next year’s presidential elections as soon as possible, recalling that an unprecedented event took place in Romania – the cancellation of the results of the first round of the presidential elections.

This happened against the background of the fact that the Constitutional Court received a large number of relevant requests. The requests referred to documents declassified by the country’s Supreme Defence Council, according to which the election campaign of candidate Calin Georgescu was allegedly the result of organised manipulation from outside.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said during a speech in Parliament that Romania will support the efforts of US President-elect Donald Trump to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

He noted that Romania “has come to value peace even more” and assured that the country “will develop in peace and tranquillity.” Ciolacu said:

“This is my guarantee and the government’s guarantee! This is why I have a very good relationship with the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump. I firmly believe that after January 20, with his official assumption of office, one of his top priorities will be to end the war in Ukraine. And Romania will support the United States with all its strength in this endeavour.”
