Romanian activists mocked MEP Diana Șoșoacă for not even being able to take a proper picture with Venezuelan President-elect Nicolás Maduro during his inauguration, according to Euractiv.
Șoșoacă leads the national-oriented SOS Romania party. She attended Maduro’s inauguration on Friday despite the European Parliament recognising his rival Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate and democratically elected president of Venezuela.
The MEP published a photo of herself standing a few metres away from Maduro, whereas other officials, including the Russian envoy Vyacheslav Volodin, shook Maduro’s hand and held meetings with him, with their photos featuring in several media outlets.
Previously, Șoșoacă tried to run for the Romanian presidential election, but the highest court barred her from nominating due to her “anti-Semitic, anti-Western and pro-Russian” public statements.
Șoșoacă secured a seat in the European Parliament in 2024. She gained prominence in 2020 thanks to her fierce campaign against vaccination.
