Romania’s minimum wage to be raised

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said Romania was ready to raise the minimum wage to 4,050 lei (about 800 euros) after President Klaus Iohannis had unveiled a law on minimum wages in Europe.

Ciolacu said there were no electoral or other obstacles to a wage increase from 1 January 2025. Labour Minister Simona Bucura-Oprescu also called the wage increase a progress towards “better paid jobs and greater economic and social stability.”

A recently signed law incorporates the EU’s Adequate Minimum Wages Directive 2022/2041 into national legislation to ensure a decent standard of living for all Romanian workers and reduce wage inequality.

The Ministry of Labour reported that the law provides that “low wages will increase on the basis of clear economic indicators and promotes collective bargaining between employers and trade unions, thus strengthening social dialogue.”

Over the last decade, Romania has become the EU country with the highest minimum wage growth rate.
