RSF drone strike targets port Sudan airbase: Army

Sudan’s army says the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) used drones to attack a military airbase near Port Sudan airport. The strike also hit a cargo warehouse and several nearby civilian sites.

This was the first RSF attack reported in the eastern city.

The army confirmed that drones caused damage to an ammunition depot. The extent of the damage remains unclear.

Reporting from Khartoum, Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan said residents in Port Sudan saw five drones launched by the RSF. “The airport serves both civilian and military flights,” she noted. “It’s uncertain whether the drones targeted military or civilian parts—or both.”

So far, there are no reports of civilian casualties. It’s also unclear if the RSF aimed at a fighter jet displayed during an air force event held the previous day.

A passenger flight from Dubai could not land at Port Sudan. Instead, it diverted to Jeddah after circling over the Red Sea, according to Flight Radar data.

Sudan has faced heavy fighting between the army and the RSF since April 2023. The conflict has destroyed infrastructure and forced millions to flee.
