US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday to discuss the ceasefire reached in the Syrian province of Suwayda.
According to the US State Department, the parties reviewed the current crisis in southern Syria. Rubio stressed the need for dialogue to resolve it and noted the importance of protecting civilians on all sides of the conflict.
The situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which are under Israeli occupation, was also discussed. The interlocutors exchanged views on regional security issues. Rubio expressed gratitude to Jordan for its leadership role in strengthening security and stability in the Middle East.
In July, fighters from the Druze community fought armed Bedouins in the province of As Suwayda in southern Syria. Israel launched a series of strikes on Syria, explaining that it was in response to support for Druze formations.
On the night of July 19, US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said that the Syrian and Israeli authorities had agreed to a ceasefire. The Syrian administration announced a general ceasefire in Syria.
Last Saturday, the authorities began deploying security forces in the province of As Suwayda, where clashes had previously taken place.
