Rubymar cargo ship sinks in Red Sea after Houthi attack 18 February

The cargo ship Rubymar has sunk after a Houthi attack on 18 February, Yemen’s internationally recognised government said in a statement on Saturday, Al Arabiya News informed.

According to the US military’s Central Command, the attack on the Rubymar resulted in significant damage to the vessel and an oil slick 18 miles in diameter.

The Belize-flagged, British-registered, Lebanese-operated cargo ship Rubymar, carrying flammable fertiliser, was damaged in a missile attack for which an Iranian-backed militant group claimed responsibility. It was transporting over 41,000 tons of fertiliser when it was attacked.

The situation in the Red Sea became more complicated last month when US and UK military forces began bombing Yemen in an attempt to quell the incidents, but the military intervention has forced many of the world’s leading tanker owners to stay away.
