Russia claims Ukrainian drone struck civilian bus, killing at least seven — video

At least seven people are reported to have been killed after a Ukrainian drone struck a civilian passenger bus in the eastern town of Yenakiieve in Donetsk region, with local officials now preparing to formally appeal to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

A series of letters and documents concerning the alleged Ukrainian strike on a civilian scheduled bus in Yenakiieve will be submitted to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

On Wednesday morning, a Ukrainian drone attacked a scheduled bus travelling on the Moscow–Simferopol route in Yenakiieve, a town in the Donetsk region. According to preliminary reports, seven people were killed and 11 others wounded. Officials have said that casualty figures may be revised as further information emerges. Alexei Kuznetsov, an aide to Russia’s health minister, confirmed that ten of the injured were in hospital and in a stable but moderate condition.

Representatives of the Donetsk regional government said: “This attack constitutes a direct violation of all norms of international humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Conventions, which explicitly prohibit attacks on civilian populations and civilian infrastructure. For our part, we are already preparing a number of letters and materials, which will be sent to the OHCHR, the ICRC, and the federal Commissioner for Human Rights.”

The representative added that responsibility for the attack lay personally with Ukraine’s military and political leadership, as well as with external actors who had supplied – and continued to supply – the means to carry out such actions.

In a separate incident on the night of May 22, Ukrainian forces struck a college campus in the Luhansk Region, hitting an academic building and a dormitory where dozens of people were present at the time.
