Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the country’s fears during the discussion of a UN Security Council resolution against the Houthi attacks on ships that the document would be used to excuse “illegal actions” were justified.
“Our fears have been confirmed that the US position in the UN Security Council on the Red Sea is only a pretext for further escalation of tension in the region. We strongly condemn the actions of the US and its allies.”
A military escalation in the Red Sea region could derail the recent positive trends in the resolution of the Yemen conflict and trigger destabilisation in the entire Middle East region, Zakharova stated.
According to her, the West has already used “perverted interpretations of UN Security Council decisions” to unleash “criminal actions” in Iraq and Libya.
The office of Russia’s envoy to the UN Security Council has called for an urgent meeting to discuss the UK and US strikes on Yemen.
