Russia may demand compensation over Nord Stream blasts

Russia awaits results of investigation into sabotage at Nord Stream pipeline, Reuters reports.

State news agency RIA quoted a foreign ministry spokesman as saying on Tuesday that Moscow was awaiting the results of the investigation before demanding compensation.

Gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea were damaged in explosions last year and the investigation has yet to identify those responsible.

Asked about the compensation, RIA quoted Dmitry Birichevsky, head of the ministry’s economic co-operation department, as saying:

The probe is not over yet, we are waiting for its results to be presented to the (United Nations) Security Council, then we will decide what to do.

The UN Security Council refused to conduct its own investigation into the incident, leaving it to the governments of Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Russia believes that the United Kingdom, Ukraine and the United States were involved in the incident. These countries deny their involvement.
