Russian grain growers expect a record harvest

Grain farmers of Russia expect a potentially record harvest of more than 150m tonnes of grain in the current agricultural season, Russian Grain Union president Arkady Zlochevsky reported on November 13.

The grain harvest season will last from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024. According to Zlochevsky, the association expects the gross grain harvest this year to be 145m tonnes, excluding grain from new territories.

Farmers have already harvested 147 million tons of grain as of November 7, considering the new territories. The export potential for the 2023-2024 agricultural season is 65 million tons, as First Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Oksana Lut, reported on November 8. The export quota for 2024, which the government will introduce on February 15, is 24 million tons, including preferences for new territories, she claimed.

Zlochevsky noted that 145 million tons was a conservative estimate, suggesting that the actual grain harvest might exceed 150 million tons only from pre-war Russian territories.

Previously, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture estimated the grain harvest in the country in 2023 at 123 million tons, including 78 million tons of wheat, which indicates a significant increase in indicators.

With these results, Russia is expected to set a new record as farmers produced a record high grain harvest of 153-155 million tons in 2022, almost 20 million tons more than Russia produced before the war broke out.
