Russia’s Lavrov rejects US proposal to resume nuclear arms control talks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected a US proposal to resume dialogue on nuclear arms control, stating that negotiations are impossible as long as Washington continues its military support for Ukraine.

Lavrov announced at an annual press conference that Russia would achieve its goals in the military conflict regardless of Western allies’ support for Kyiv, Russian media reported.

The foreign minister claimed that Moscow rejected the proposal to resume nuclear arms control contacts, saying that Washington first needs to revise its current policy towards Russia in order to hold such talks.

We aren’t seeing any basis, not only for any additional joint measures in the sphere of arms control and reduction of strategic risks, but for any discussion of strategic stability issues with the US.

The minister also reiterated that Moscow would continue its military operations despite increasing international pressure.

At the conference to summarise the Foreign Ministry’s activities in 2023, Lavrov also condemned the joint actions of the US and the UK on Yemen, according to Russian media.
