Hollywood star Ryan Gosling is set to lead a new Star Wars film titled Starfighter, slated for release on 7 May 2027, the BBC reports.
The project, announced at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, will be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and marks Gosling’s first foray into the iconic sci-fi franchise.
Gosling, whose childhood passion for Star Wars was evident as he showcased vintage bedsheets from his youth during the event, described the script as “so good” with “great and original characters”.
It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.
The film will introduce a standalone narrative unrelated to the Skywalker saga or recent sequels. Set roughly five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Gosling will portray a brand-new character in what Levy called a “new adventure” exploring an uncharted era in the Star Wars timeline.
The Canadian actor, known for La La Land and The Notebook, revealed that the franchise shaped his understanding of cinema.
You can see from the picture, I guess I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film. And it’s probably framed my idea of what a movie even was.
The announcement follows Gosling’s Oscar-nominated turn as Ken in 2023’s Barbie and his leading role in this year’s action-comedy The Fall Guy. Meanwhile, Disney confirmed the next Star Wars theatrical release will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Pedro Pascal, expected to hit cinemas ahead of Starfighter.
Few plot details have been disclosed, but the project signals Disney’s continued expansion of the Star Wars universe beyond its core sagas, with a A-list star now at the helm.
