Sánchez to propose to parliament recognition of Palestinian state

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Saturday he would propose to the country’s parliament that it recognise a Palestinian state, AP News reported.

Sánchez joined a chorus of other European leaders and government officials who said they could support a two-state solution in the Middle East as international discontent with Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories grows.

French President Emmanuel Macron said last month that it was not a “taboo” for France to recognise a Palestinian state. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the UK could formally recognise a Palestinian state after a ceasefire.

Sánchez’s comments at a human rights conference in the city of Bilbao came as aid shipments headed to Gaza amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and a new willingness by the international community to work around Israeli restrictions.

“I will propose granting Spain’s recognition to the Palestinian state,” Sánchez said. “I do this out of moral conviction, for a just cause and because it is the only way that the two states, Israel and Palestine, can live together in peace.”
