Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has told on Thursday visiting US lawmakers that he fears an attempt on his life because of his desire to normalise relations with Tel Aviv.
The Saudi leader discussed the threats he faces to explain why he must make sure any deal includes a clear and irreversible path to a future “Palestinian state.”
In one such meeting, he referred to former Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated in 1981 by Egyptian fundamentalists following a peace deal with Israel.
He also spoke of the threats he faced, explaining why any such deal must include a real path to a Palestinian state – especially now that the war in Gaza has heightened Arab rage against Israel.
Earlier in August, Israeli media reported that Tel Aviv had put the process of normalising relations with Riyadh on hold.
Netanyahu made this decision at a time of rapid political change in the US. The Israeli minister was expected to use the normalisation of relations with Saudi Arabia to stabilise the political situation amid tensions in the Gaza Strip.
