Schools on break for one more week on island of Santorini

Greek authorities have issued a warning of increased volcanic activity near the island of Santorini.

The Organisation for Earthquake Protection and Planning (OASP) convened a joint meeting of committees to assess the situation. Some 1,300 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher have been recorded in the Anidros Sea area between Thira and Amorgos since February 1, with a maximum magnitude of 5.3.

There has been a “significant increase in seismicity,” with more than 380 earthquakes recorded, Geodynamic Institute director Vassilis Karastathis told APE-MPE news agency yesterday. He added on Sunday that scientists are “closely monitoring the development of this phenomenon.”

At the same time, the competent authorities are on alert. OASP President Efthimios Lekkas convened a joint meeting of the two scientific committees under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the presence of Minister Vassilis Kikilias and other competent authorities.

As a precautionary measure, a squad of the 1st EMAK with a rescue dog and 2 squads of the 1st Special Forestry Squad, as well as a squad of drone operators and air rescuers went to Santorini Island.

As a precautionary measure, schools in Tyre, Ios, Anafi and Amorgos will be closed until Friday, February 21, 2025. The committee plans to meet again on Wednesday to reassess the situation.
