Scotland’s Prime Minister Hamza Yousaf stated that the British government and the opposition should “hang their heads in shame” as they witnessed the massacre in which thousands of women and children were killed in front of the British people in the Gaza Strip.
Yousaf quoted from a letter sent by the leader of the Scottish National Party in the British Parliament, Stephen Flynn, to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, urging them to endorse an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
In early January, the Scottish Prime Minister called the British government’s repeated refusal to urge an immediate ceasefire in Gaza a “shame.” Yousaf’s office stated that the UK government is considered a “reliable ally” of the Israeli government, demanding an end to indiscriminate attacks killing thousands of people in the enclave.
It is time for the British government to say strongly and clearly that Israel’s actions go far beyond a legitimate response to the Hamas attack on October 7.
Yousaf’s wife’s parents were trapped in the Gaza Strip under shelling for more than a month before they managed to leave the enclave in mid-November.
