Seoul, Washington signed memorandum of understanding on nuclear exports

South Korea and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding on principles governing nuclear exports and co-operation, a US official said Thursday.

The pact was signed by South Korean Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

The US Department of Energy said the pact “reflects the mutual commitment of the two countries to maximise the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in accordance with the highest international standards of nuclear safety, security, safeguards and non-proliferation.”

The pact lays out a framework for the two sides to co-operate in “expanding civil nuclear energy in third countries while strengthening controls on the export of civil nuclear technology.”

The signing of the pact began last November following a dispute between South Korea’s Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power and US energy company Westinghouse Electric Co. over the export of nuclear reactors.
