Serbia to consider withdrawing from the Council of Europe if Kosovo is admitted to this international organisation promoting cooperation in the field of human rights and freedom, Serbian Media said.
Accepting Kosovo’s bid to join the organisation “would de-facto mean kicking Serbia out,” the agency quoted the country’s president, Aleksandar Vučić, as telling Prva TV.
“We’ll see if Serbia remains or not” if Kosovo is accepted into the Strasbourg-based organisation, he said. “Maybe they would prefer to have Kosovo in the Council of Europe instead of Serbia.”
The Balkan country has been fighting against international recognition of Kosovo and its membership in international organisations since Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008, following a war over the territory.
Serbia still sees Kosovo as part of its territory, and has relied on China and Russia in challenging its sovereignty.
