At least eight people died, several others were seriously injured, and more than 14 petrol tankers burned after a fire broke out on the Iran-Iraq border, Arab media reported.
Several petrol tankers caught fire at the Parviz Khan border crossing between Iran and Iraq in the latest incident.
A large fire broke out this evening in the square of the Parviz Khan border crossing with Iran from the Kalar side on the outskirts of Sulaymaniyah, northeast of Diyala.
“The fire devoured a large number of trucks and fuel vehicles,” the source added. The Iranians official statement said the incident did not involve Iranian tankers and only affected the Iraqi side of the border.
Jafar Salarinasab, the managing director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC), confirmed the fire.
The tankers in question are Iraqi and have no connection to the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company.
The Parviz Khan border crossing is a key point in trade between Iran and Iraq, especially in oil and gas trade. The crossing is located in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, bordering eastern Iraq’s Diyala Governorate.
Iranian officials did not provide details on the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage. However, the fire came amid heightened tensions in the region, although there were no indications at the moment that the incident was linked to any wider conflict.
