Raging floodwaters swept through Cannes on Monday, pushing cars onto the streets and putting the French Riviera city known for its film festival on high alert.
“Intense storms, occasionally accompanied by hail, are underway in our area,” the municipality said on X, calling on everyone to “stay informed and be vigilant when traveling.”
Several areas, including Mimont Street, Sector Commander Maria and Lower Avenue of Marechal Gallieni, “are closed to traffic due to heavy runoff and very difficult traffic conditions,” the statement noted.
“Damage has been reported in some cellars and shops in République,” the municipality said, adding: “There are no victims or injuries at this time.”
“The situation is returning to normal,” it said.
The French meteorological agency said in its bulletin that another storm was possible in Cannes in the afternoon.
Elsewhere in Europe, from Romania to Poland, at least 17 people died earlier this month in central Europe’s worst flooding in two decades.
