Situation on Lebanese border “not sustainable,” Israel says

Israeli officials and media reported that an Iranian-backed Hezbollah missile attack was allegedly prevented by Israeli preemptive strikes on southern Lebanon.

Government spokesman David Mencer said Hezbollah had received a “crushing blow” from the Israeli strikes. However, he added that a longer-term solution was still needed.

The current situation is not sustainable. Israel will do its duty and return its population to our sovereign territory.

Financial aid to residents evacuated from their homes was extended until 31 December, according to Arab media. However, some military experts expressed hope that Israel’s action could help negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza.

Hamas announced it would not agree to a deal allowing Israeli troops to remain on the southern edge of Gaza along the border with Egypt.

Early Sunday morning, about 100 Israeli planes struck dozens of Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon. Israel destroyed thousands of rockets that the military said were aimed at Israel. Hezbollah did launch hundreds of missiles, but most were intercepted or fell in open terrain, according to local media.

However, Hezbollah claimed the operation was successful, hinting at some de-escalation. Iran, which vowed to retaliate against Israel for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month, also said it was not seeking to exacerbate tensions in the region.
